A video of a labourer in Amritsar being beaten to death that had gone viral on social media was not noticed by the state labour office.
The video purportedly shows Ram Singh hanging upside-down and being beaten with an iron rod by Jaspreet Singh, his employer, at the factory where he used to work. Singh later succumbed to injuries.
Jaspreet had suspected Ram Singh of theft. A person at the site recorded the video. “I have no information of the incident. Let me check,” said Assistant labour commissioner Amritsar Vipan Pariar. When The Indian Express called him after more than an hour, he said, “I have checked with my sources. I have no knowledge of such an incident.” Jaspreet allegedly kidnapped Singh from his home on October 15. Later, his body was recovered from a road. A police case, however, was registered against Jaspreet Singh and two others.
No arrests have been made yet.
